The fruits of Lion's Mane are used both in cooking and as a medicinal product due to their bioactive components (β-glucans, polysaccharides, proteins, vitamins). When used for medicinal and health purposes, powder or extract obtained from dried fruit bodies is usually used.
Before starting a course of treatment, it is recommended to consult a doctor or herbalist, especially if you have chronic diseases or are undergoing other types of therapy.
Since the fruit is sold in a 500 gram package, this amount is calculated for a long period of use. To obtain a noticeable effect, the following dosages are often recommended:
• If you take powder from dried fruits:
– Preventive course: 3–5 grams per day (approximately 1 teaspoon of powder).
– If correction is necessary (for example, to support the functioning of the nervous system), the dose can be increased to 5–10 grams per day.
• If a concentrated extract (obtained from the same fruits) is used, the daily dose can range from 500 to 1000 mg (0.5–1 gram) of extract, which is equivalent to the amount of active substances in 3–5 grams of dried fruits.
When using 500 grams of powder:
– At a dosage of 5 grams/day, the package will last for approximately 100 days.
– At a dosage of 10 grams/day – for 50 days.
The selection of dosage is always individual, and for the first month it is recommended to start with a lower dose to assess tolerability, then, in the absence of negative reactions, gradually increase to the recommended level.
The caloric content of mushrooms depends on their condition: fresh mushrooms contain a lot of water (about 90%), and in dried form, nutrients are significantly concentrated. Here are two calculation options:
• If we are talking about fresh fruits:
– The average caloric content of hedgehog mushroom is approximately 25–35 kcal per 100 g.
– For 500 g of fresh mushrooms this will be about 125–175 kcal.
• If dry matter (powder) is used, the caloric content is increased by removing water:
– Dried mushrooms can contain about 300–350 kcal per 100 g.
– For 500 g of dry powder you will get approximately 1500–1750 kcal.
When used for medicinal purposes, the powder or extract is most often used, so within the daily diet (for example, 5-10 grams per day) the calorie content will be insignificant (approximately 15-35 kcal).
To improve absorption and maximize effectiveness, it is recommended to consider the following points:
1. Warm drinks. The powder can be diluted in warm water, cream, milk or herbal tea. Warm liquid helps the active substances to be released and absorbed faster.
2. Complete nutrition. Taking it with a small amount of healthy fats (such as nuts, avocado, or olive oil) can help improve absorption of fat-soluble components, if present. Although lion's mane's mane's main action is related to water-soluble polysaccharides, a balanced macronutrient diet can be beneficial for overall digestion.
3. Vitamin complex. Some experts recommend combining the use of medicinal mushrooms with products rich in B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids (fish, flaxseed), which supports the nervous system and improves the bioavailability of active substances.
4. Splitting the dosage. If the daily dose is calculated for 5-10 grams of powder, it can be taken in 2 doses - morning and evening dose. This will allow the bioactive components to be supplied to the body evenly and reduce possible irritation of the gastrointestinal tract.
• Start taking with a minimum dose (for example, 3-5 grams of powder per day) and, if there is no discomfort, gradually increase to 5-10 grams, depending on the goals and recommendations of a specialist.
• Take in the morning and/or evening with warm water or herbal tea.
• To improve absorption, include some healthy fats and eat a balanced meal.
